Not Just an Ordinary Wing Chun School

The London Wing Chun Academy for Martial Arts & Fitness Classes in London.

Our success does indicate that we are different from the typical Wing Chun school. We are effective, dynamic, and capable of fighting in arenas out of our comfort zone. Most importantly our training methods and approach differs by far too many Wing Chun schools in London.

On 25th January 2014 members of the LWCA competed in their first submission only Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) competition. Each competitor fought in a round robin format which resulted in 6 fights per student. Our students had less than one year of training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, despite this we achieved 4 Gold and 2 Silver medals. Quite remarkable considering that we are a Wing Chun gym.

Although, we are under no illusions that our fighters will become world champions in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. We are simply proud that they have achieved something that many would assume we were not capable of achieving. It is often the view within the fighting arts that Wing Chun has lost its effectiveness for real fighting. We hope to change this perception, and remind the martial arts community that Wing Chun students can be formidable opponents.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is far removed from Wing Chun. Yet we’ve managed to produce a calibre of student that is not only multi faceted and capable of performing in a number of fighting arenas, but also exceptional at traditional Wing Chun as well. This competition format required our students to fight in a Gi (Kimono) under conditions not familiar to a typical Wing Chun student. In fact, the objective of any Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competition is to throw and then submit the opponent, and in most events it is possible to win by points.

‘Submission Only’ Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competitions are becoming increasingly popular in the mainstream. Particularly because of the focus on winning by submission which is seen as more comparative to the early emphasis of Jiu Jitsu. That is, to win by disabling your opponent or forcing them to submit by tapping.

Our success in this tournament does indicate that we are different from the typical Wing Chun school. We are effective, dynamic, and capable of fighting in arenas out of our comfort zone. Most importantly our training methods and approach differs by far too many Wing Chun schools in London. Perhaps our success is attributed to our forward thinking, and our willingness to adapt and improving our teaching/coaching methods. This is characterised by our unique fitness, strength, and conditioning programme differs from any other Wing Chun school in London.

Whether your requirement is to simply get fit, learn to defend yourself, or compete at a high level, the London Wing Chun Academy has a brilliant, highly experienced coaching team offering a range of training. Come see us, maybe you’ll be our next success story.
