MMA LIVE! 1 – LONDON, ON – John Labatt Centre – Thursday, May 19 @ 7:30PM

January 28th, 2011

BJJ is an integral part of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and, just this month, Ontario legislators officially legalized Mixed Martial Arts in this province.

On May 19, 2011, Jones Entertainment Group (JEG) will bring an 8-bout MMA card to the John Labatt Centre (JLC). The JLC seats over 9000 spectators and JEG promises world-class action, production, at a world-class venue. This event follows hot on the heels of the first-ever Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) event to take place in Ontario on April 29th. While that UFC will undoubtedly be the largest MMA event in Ontario this year, MMA LIVE1 has potential to come in a worthy second place.

We will finally be able to witness skilled strikers and groundfighters mixing it out in our own backyard and, with any luck, one or more of them may be sporting the FBJJA crest!

12 Commandments of BJJ by Carlos Gracie Sr.

January 23rd, 2011

I came across this on the web today and thought it should be passed on.  I see how these can apply to all facets of life and not just BJJ.  Oussssssss!

1. Be so strong that nothing can disturb the peace of your mind.

2. Talk to all people about happiness, health, and prosperity.

3. Give to all your friends the feeling of being valued.

4. Look at things by the enlightened point of view and update your optimism on reality.

5. Think only about the best, work only for the best, and always expect the best.

6. Be as just and enthusiastic about others victories as you are with yours.

7. Forget about past mistakes and focus your energy on the victories of tomorrow.

8. Always make those around you happy and keep a smile to all people who talk to you.

9. Apply the largest amount of your time on self-improvement and no time in criticizing others.

10. Be big enough so you can feel unsatisfied, be noble enough so you can feel anger, be strong enough so you can feel fear, and be happy enough so you can feel frustrations.

11. Hold a good opinion about your self and communicate that to the world, but not through dissonant words but through good works.

12. Believe strongly that the world is in your side, as long as you stay loyal to the best of yourself.

5 Mins with…Adam Bennett of OntarioMedic.ca

Adam Bennett of OntarioMedic.ca is looking to make paramedics more aware of how they can protect themselves while on the job. and to also promote paramedics in the public eye.

Adam Bennett of OntarioMedic.ca

You’ve no doubt heard about the Self Defense for EMS seminar that LondonBJJ and OntarioMedic.ca are presenting (it is, afterall, posted directly underneath this post), but do you really know who came up with the idea for a paramedic specific safety seminar?  I didn’t think so.  So here he is, the man behind OntarioMedic.ca, a paramedic himself, Mr. Adam Bennett.

LondonBJJ has teamed up with OntarioMedic.ca to bring you a Self Defense seminar specifically geared towards the needs of the paramedic, featuring none other than Master Sylvio Behring of the Franco Behring Jiu Jitsu Alliance.  From the OntarioMedic.ca website:

Every paramedic knows that their job has many dangers.  The one aspect of the job that is most over looked is personal safety. Paramedics are routinely called into violent scenes, or even more frequently into scenes that have the potential for violence, with little to no training to deal with it.  Every paramedic needs to be prepared for what is on the other side of the door. OntarioMedic has worked with Master Sylvio Behring and the Franco Behring Jiu-Jitsu Association to bring to you a Self Defense program designed specifically for paramedics.  He is a 7th Degree Red/Black Belt in the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, is known the world over as a leader in creating Defensive Tactics and Personal Protection programs for the Military, Police and Security companies and, for the first time ever, he will be bringing his experience and knowledge to the world of EMS through a program designed specifically for paramedics.

Master Behring, along with some of the Franco Behring Jiu-Jitsu Alliance’s most respected instructors, have worked with OntarioMedic to design a program of self defense and personal safety that meets the specific needs of the paramedic.  Focus is based on paramedic safety without causing harm or injury to an attacker or aggressive patient.

If you are a paramedic, or care about one, please pass this on to them.  Seminar is November 15th, 2010 at the Etobicoke Dojo, 78 Six Points Rd, Etobicoke, ON.  Check out www.OntarioMedic.ca for further details and to reserve your spot.

See you on the mats!

Master Berhing’s Visit to LondonBJJ

October 10th, 2010
LondonBJJ members are honoured to have Master Berhing visit their dojo. Ousssssssss!

LondonBJJ members are honoured to have Master Berhing visit their dojo. Ousssssssss!

Being  in Canada for Arashi Do/Franco Behring’s fall symposium, Master Behring stopped in Toronto for a few extra days for some private lessons and classes before heading home to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.  A last minute inquiry to when LondonBJJ had a class turned into Master making the trip to London on a Tuesday night.  This was his first trip to London to visit one of the newest schools in the Franco Behring Association. It was a pleasure to have him come to our dojo and teach a class. Thanks to Professor Marco Costa, again, for making the trip to London to support our club, and also to the Orangeville Dojo clan who always make the trip down to join in. Ousssssssss!  Follow the link below for a few photos from the evening class.

Complete Jiu Jitsu.

July 24th, 2010

So to follow the last post of a great demonstration of Jiu Jitsu by Masters Rickson and Royler Gracie, which included self defenses as well sparring (or rolling), I came across a small article on GrapplingWeekly.com that tied in extremely well with it. In the article Master Rickson states that “competition Jiu Jitsu represents only 30% of real Jiu Jitsu.” You can read the article here.

Then, low and behold, this video pops up on YouTube, which I came across on one of my Franco Behring teammate’s Facebook page. In it you will find the likes of Grand Master’s Helio Gracie, Carlos Gracie & Joao Alberto Barreto as well as Master Carlson Gracie & Sensei George Mehdi. (sorry if I got any of those titles wrong. Ousssss.) In their demonstration, which was to get Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu sanctioned by one of the most important presidents in Brazil’s history: Getúlio Vargas, they show the compete realm of jiu jitsu which Master Rickson talks about. Please watch and enjoy this video.

Be sure to look around GrapplingWeekly.com while you’re there. There are some great articles, videos & photos as well as events, news & results sections. Definitely one to bookmark and come back too.

See you on the mats. Oussssssssss!
